A positive start to the year for the Batu Kawan community, as the Penang State Government continues to support education and local development.
Chow Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Penang, announced a RM200,000 contribution to support the construction of the new campus for SJK(C) Kuang Yu.
The announcement was made during today the school’s topping-out ceremony at the new site in Batu Kawan, marking the completion of the main building structure. Construction is now close to full completion, and the school is expected to begin operations early next year.
During the event, the Chief Minister shared that the project has been a long journey, beginning from early discussions with the school board and community representatives, to the approval of land and the start of construction works. Reaching this stage, he said, reflects strong cooperation between the state, the school management and the wider community.
He also highlighted that while the physical building is almost ready, the true goal is to create a meaningful learning environment for students. Continued support from the public and private sectors will remain important as the school prepares for its next phase.
According to the project organisers, approximately RM1 million is still required to complete the remaining construction works, with an additional RM3 million to RM5 million needed for furniture, equipment and learning facilities.
At the same ceremony, the founder of KTL Electrical Engineering announced a RM1 million pledge to support the school, reflecting the growing role of corporate and community partners in strengthening education in Penang.
The state government has also previously contributed to the project by providing institutional support and allocating land for the new campus, with the site valued at more than RM20 million.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister expressed his hope that the community will return in the future to celebrate the 100th anniversary of SJK(C) Kuang Yu, which was established in 1935, as a symbol of continuity, shared responsibility and long-term commitment to education.
