The Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merits Society Malaysia is embarking on a meaningful new chapter with the development of its own integrated campus in Bandar Cassia, Batu Kawan. A groundbreaking ceremony was held recently to mark the beginning of this visionary development. The event was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, and attended by several key state figures, including Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, Lim Siew Khim, Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, and Penang Development Corporation (PDC) CEO Datuk Aziz Bakar. Also present were Tzu Chi Malaysia CEO Koay Ji-Yuanand Penang Commissioner Datuk Khoo Boo Leong.
In his speech, Chow praised the scale and long-term vision of the project, calling it a future beacon of holistic development.
“Once completed, the Tzu Chi campus will nurture civic consciousness and a compassionate society. It will stand as a symbol of our commitment to building a future that values people, purpose, and progress,” he said.
He also noted that Batu Kawan is an ideal location for such a forward-thinking project. Already home to world-class industrial zones, academic institutions, and growing residential neighborhoods, the area’s potential will be further elevated with the addition of the Tzu Chi campus.
“This is more than just a physical development — it represents an investment in values and people,” Chow added. “As part of our Penang2030 vision, this initiative reinforces our efforts to create a more empathetic, educated, and inclusive society.”
Chow also highlighted the close collaboration between the state government and PDC in facilitating the project, especially in the allocation of land and continuous support throughout the planning process.
Meanwhile, Tzu Chi Malaysia CEO Koay Ji-Yuan expressed sincere gratitude to the Penang state leadership:
