Singapore-based medical group founder leverages home state as entry point into Malaysian market

Penang continues to attract strong regional investment, with Alfa Medicus, a Singapore-based healthcare group established in 2008, entering the Malaysian market through the opening of Aptus Surgery and Specialists Centre in Jalan Burma, George Town. Known for its integrated day surgery centres, specialist clinics and diagnostic imaging services, the group’s expansion marks another step forward in strengthening Penang’s position as a leading regional healthcare and medical tourism hub.

Founder’s Perspective: A Meaningful Homecoming

Founder, executive chairman and CEO, Mr Lim Beng Hai described the expansion as more than just a business move, but also a homecoming. As a former student of Penang Free School, he shared his intention to give back to his home state while contributing to the region’s healthcare development.

He added that this is only the beginning of the group’s expansion into Malaysia, with plans to open additional centres in the future as demand grows.

State Perspective: Strengthening Healthcare Ecosystem

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the centre’s integrated approach, which combines specialist consultations, day surgery, diagnostics and health screening under one roof. This setup helps reduce patient movement between facilities, shorten waiting times and improve overall patient experience.

He also pointed to the strong performance of Penang’s medical tourism sector, noting that in 2025, the state recorded over 449,000 foreign patients, a 7.3% increase year-on-year, generating approximately RM985 million in revenue.

Facility Overview

The RM100 million facility spans over 3,530 square metres across five floors and offers a range of in-house specialties including general surgery, ENT, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and aesthetic medicine.

Chow added that Penang’s healthcare sector continues to grow on the back of strong professional expertise and sustained investment, helping to expand capacity and raise overall standards.

PropertyMart Market Perspective

From PropertyMart’s perspective, the expansion of Penang’s healthcare sector is a clear signal of long-term demand growth. As medical tourism continues to strengthen, areas near established healthcare hubs such as George Town are expected to see more consistent interest from healthcare professionals, expatriates and long-stay patients.

For property buyers and investors, this reinforces an important point — locations supported by healthcare, connectivity and daily conveniences tend to demonstrate more resilient demand and stronger long-term value.
